Item Details
Location:
Japan
Date:
Early Showa period (1926-1945)
Description:
A superb and unusual shibori (tie-dye) and hand-painted black rinzu (damask) silk kimono patterned with ume (plum) blossoms. Very good condition, with minor imperfections. 50” across shoulders x 61” height. In Japan the plum is associated with the start of spring, as plum blossoms are some of the first blossoms to open during the year (February and March). The event is celebrated with plum festivals (Ume Matsuri) in public parks, shrines and temples across Japan -- perhaps this kimono was worn at this festival.
