Item Details
Taisho period (1912-1926)
A high-quality silk haori featuring paulownia motifs and large crests on a rinzu (damask) background. The rinzu background - and this is unusual - reflects a similar paulownia motif as the yuzen-painted foreground. The two large crests are entirely hand-embroidered. There are three small family crests on the back of this garment, indicating that this haori was for formal use - most haori have no family crests. The inner lining is of shibori with hand-painted tiny motifs - see detail images. The overall impression one gets of this garment - the high-quality silk, the fine shibori lining, the careful choice of pastel colors in the yuzen-work, the relaxed spacing between the paulownia motifs suggest an expensive garment created by a top-tier artist('s). 50" from sleeve-end to sleeve-end x 41" height.
