This rinzu (figured silk) juban features stenciled flying crane motifs and faux-shibori clouds, with white freehand painted highlights accentuating the cranes' whiteness. Measuring 49 inches (124 cm) from sleeve-end to sleeve-end and standing at 58 inches (147 cm) in height, the Japanese red-crowned crane symbolizes longevity, loyalty, honor, wisdom, and spirituality, believed to connect heaven and earth as messengers of the gods. Worn beneath a furisode, likely by the bride before or during the main wedding ceremony, this juban is unusual—its designs seamlessly cross all seams, including the collar and front closure. Achieving this uninterrupted pattern likely required the creation of multiple rolls of cloth, a rare and labor-intensive process usually not seen in typical kimonos.
